Protect Yourself and Others - DIY Handmade Reusable Face Mask Step By Step Tutorial

Protect Yourself and Others - DIY Handmade Reusable Face Mask Step By Step Tutorial

'My face mask protects you, yours protects me'.

Unfortunately, due to recent events, we can see not only a lack of groceries and antiseptics but also medical masks. We decided to share a step by step tutorial of how to make a  face mask. You can make it for yourself, for your loved ones and for those who is needed it.

This kind of DIY face mask is reusable - just wash it, preferably at a temperature of at least 60 degrees. Mask protects the face and nose. If you have your own method other than ours, please share it with us!

This face mask is convenient and covers nose and mouth due to folds. It can be an alternative to a virus protection medical face mask. The dimensions were calculated for an average person, but they can be changed for children.

For this face mask tutorial, we will need the next set of materials:

  1. Cotton fabric in 2 colors - neutral (white) and colored (optional).
  2. Elastic tape (any thin elastic).
  3. Tailor's chalk or a tailor's pencil.
  4. Ruler
  5. Sewing scissors.
  6. Sewing pins
  7. Iron
  8. Sewing machine (you can also sew with your hands).
  9. Threads

Step 1 Prepare a face mask kit. Cut out the blanks from the fabric:

  • 26 x 36 cm - 1pc;
  • 4,5 x 10 cm - 2pcs;
  • elastic 6-7cm - 2pcs.

Step 2 Fold the largest part in half with the front of the fabric inward. Sew the edges on the side of 20cm, leaving 7mm borders.

Step 3 Turn it on the front side, straighten and iron the borders.

Step 4 Measure 3,8 cm from the bottom using a ruler, put a mark with a pencil and draw a horizontal line. Measure 2.5 cm from this line and draw the second line. Make folds and fix them around the edges of the mask with pins. In the same way, make the second and third folds, and then sew the lines.

Step 5 Pin the elastic to the edges of the mask. Fix the ends with short lines (zigzag will be the best).

Hi, what size would you use for a child’s mask?
yes pleat both sides so it is completely reversible and can be worn for 2 days before washing
Both together.
I made my binding with 1 1/2 ribbon. It just went faster! Thank you!
Thank you. I had trouble with the side bindings...
-I folded them (bindings) in half, right sides together
- compared these right sides together bindings next to pleated side of mask
- from this comparison, I marked a side seam equal to the pleated raw edge.
-sewed a side seam on bindings, trimmed corners, turned right side out
- sewed raw edges of binding to raw edge of pleated mask...about 1/4" to 3/8"
-Flip over, encasing raw edges, sew down along folded edge of binding.
-Whew, pretty easy but hard to write.
- I'm too gadget nerdy to post a photo

Shouldn't the pleats go down? It is only a problem if a nose wire is sewn in.
Keep sewing
I found the elastic far to short. Otherwise for a beginner it was ok.
Do you pleat the backside as well or just the front?
